Celebration of Life
Obituary of David Wamsley
With heavy hearts we announce the sudden passing of a remarkable man, John David ‘Red’ Wamsley, on May 24, 2026. Our beloved husband, father, loyal friend, master storyteller, and true legend to all who knew him.
David leaves behind his beloved wife Penny, his daughters Jane (Jason), Sally (Dayne), and his sister Kerry, as well as his brother and sister in laws. Proud grandfather to Tayler, Jeremiah, Cheyenne, Lilah and Alroy. Survived by his many cousins and many nieces and nephews who will all miss him dearly. Predeceased by his parents Buck and Joan Wamsley, his brother Pat and his father-in-law Harry B Barrett.
David owned and operated hoop net/seine net fishery in Long Point. He was the Head Keeper of Long Point Company for many years. When he retired he found his love of farming. David lived a life defined by adventure, craftsmanship, laughter and connection. He was a man whose friendship stretched far beyond Norfolk County- reaching east, west, north and across borders outside of Canada. Wherever he went he left an impression that would never be forgotten.
A true historian at heart, David was a keeper of stories, he carried the memories of people, places and times gone by, with unmatched detail and passion. Whether gathered around a kitchen table, beside the water, in a workshop, or around a fire, people were drawn to him for his wisdom, humour, and unforgettable tales. He had a gift for making history come alive and making everyone feel part of it.
He found joy in the things he built with his hands and heart. He loved motorcycles, Jeeps, boats and life on the water. He built boats and numerous buildings, leaving behind not only structures, but lasting memories and legacies within them.
David also loved bringing people together. His home and gatherings were filled with warmth, great food, and endless conversation. He enjoyed cooking for large crowds, feeding not only appetites but friendships and community.
To know him was to know generosity, loyalty, and authenticity. He was the kind of man people gravitated towards – dependable, larger than life, and impossible to replace. He leaves behind a legacy of stories, friendships, craftsmanship, and love that will continue to live on through everyone fortunate enough to have known him. He will be deeply missed, forever remembered and always celebrated.
