Obituary of CAROL KOROSTIL

KOROSTIL, Carol Bertha (nee Foster) of Port Dover passed away peacefully on Monday February 2, 2015 at Norfolk General Hospital in her 82nd year. Born Carol Bertha Foster on November 29th, 1933 in Croydon, England Carol was the daughter of the late Albert Joseph Sidney Foster and Evelyn Rose Foster (nee Jenner). Predeceased by her husband Michael (2002). Much loved mother of her only son Dwight Michael. Carol is also survived by brother Nicholas Edwin Joseph Foster and Jennifer Broomfield and their families all of Australia. Carol grew up in Oxted, England south of London. Carol was born during the great depression and was a survivor of the Battle of Britain during WWII. Carol would often recall the VI, VII German rockets the "Buzz Bombs" and people running for the subway bomb shelters to escape the Nazi aerial assault. Carol also spoke of watching as a little girl the dog fights between RAF spitfires and German Fighter planes crashing into the English Channel. Carol lived by the British war slogans of "Make do And Mend", "Waste Not Want Not" and "Keep Calm and Carry On", which would serve her well for the rest of her life. Carol came from a military family; her late husband served as an anti-aircraft gunner in Eastern Europe and spent time in a Nazi internment camp in WWII. Carol's father was involved in the rescue of British soldiers at Dunkirk. Carol's Uncle Captain Eric Webb served in WWII with the British army. Carol's cousin, Sir Michael Watson Wright, O.B.E., was a wing commander with the RAF flying in the pacific theater in WWII. Carol often spoke fondly of her Grandma Jenner whose husband Charles Jenner left behind his wife and 5 daughters to serve with the British army in WWII; he was killed and buried in France. Carol and her husband were part of a generation that suffered so much in order to prevent future generations from doing the same. as a young girl, Carol was an aspiring ballet dancer and had auditioned with the Royal Ballet Company. She was coached by her aunt Edna at hr Edna Mae dance studios, 51 Brixton Lane, Thornton Heath, Surrey England which is still in operation today. Carol was also taught by her cousin Kenneth Hornby who danced for RKO studios UK. Carol and Michael were married in 1955 and in 1957 immigrated to Canada. Michael and Carol crossed the Atlantic aboard a Greek vessel named the Ascania and landed in Quebec City. Onboard the ship Carol contracted polio thereby ending hers dance career. From 1960 to1968 Carol worked as a lab technologist and medical secretary at Toronto Western Hospital and Hospital for Sick Children supporting her husband as he finished engineering studies at University of Toronto. Carol and her family moved to Port Dover in 1970 and she became involved in Girl Guides and helped form the Port Dover Summer Festival in 1972, retiring from her post as chair in 2004. In 1985 Carol received the Ontario Sesqui- Centennial (150 years)) Lieutenant-Governors medal for volunteerism and community service. Carol was also awarded a 40 year service medallion in 2010. Up to shortly before her passing, Carol was working on her Masters Certification in tapestry and embroidery from the American Needlepoint Guild. Carol was also well on her way to completing her Bachelors of Commerce degree from the University of Waterloo. Carol and her husband helped establish the department of Ukrainian Studies at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. Carol was a very proud Canadian and loved being a Port Doverite, she had a gentle spirit and was very kind to animals and children and was an avid supporter of the World Wildlife Fund and the S.P.C.A. Carol's first love was Britain and was fiercely loyal to the Monarchy. A true Brit Carol always kept her emotions in check, her childhood wartime experiences helped prepare her for A life of outstanding public service both as a private citizen, wife, mother and as a public leader. Carol valued family and community and was a true English lady of the highest order. Mom and Dad you went to the ends of the earth to give me a most wonderful life. I am deeply honoured and grateful to call you my parents. I owe you everything!
