My deepest condolences to you Debbie and your family on the loss of your dad. It has been many years since I have seen you but think of you often

Son, father, husband, grandfather, brother, friend, tradesman, realtor, shop owner, prison
guard, teacher, coach, mentor. My Dad, Fred, was known by many names or titles by
many people. He was an avid boater, fisherman, Lion's club member and Associate
Legion Member.
He was a great man full of wisdom, empathy and a powerful personality that was
passionate and loving. He knew so much about so many different subjects; he loved
nature and animal shows, fixing and building just about anything from cars to houses.
He loved hockey and football (European football - or soccer as it's known here in
Canada) and his favourite teams were the Toronto Maple Leafs and Tottenham Hotspurs.
He was extremely loyal and trustworthy. Many people admired him for his integrity and
his ability to speak the truth into any given situation. He was a brave, adventurous and
courageous soul, my Dad.
Born in London, England May 31, 1943, my Dad didn't have an easy childhood. He and
his sister were abandoned at a very young age during the war and after spending time in
the hospital, they were adopted. As a teenager he was separated from his older sister
Maggie and only reunited with her over 40 years later when he was in his 50's. My Dad
was a very brave and courageous man. At the young age of 20, after working as a tool
and dye tradesman and then a prison guard, he decided to venture across the Atlantic with
his young family and came to Canada in 1963 landing by boat in Halifax. Mom and Dad
arrived in Hamilton with an 8 month old Debbie and proceeded to build a life together. I
was born soon after, but Mom and Dad got home sick and decided to move back to
England where my younger brother Andy was born. After a very short time Mom and
Dad realized that Canada was where their future lay, and they headed back to Ontario to
settle down once again. My Dad was adventurous. Always looking for a new
challenge, Dad built his first home in Smithville Ontario on a four-acre hobby farm.
Running the tractor, operating the farm with horses, a cow named Ginger, chickens and
more kept him busy yet he also operated a small convenience store called Fred's Variety.
He also decided to become a real estate agent for a time. My Dad was always my
teacher. He taught me to run the cash and tend to customers at the store. We spent
many hours there together. He taught me to ride a bike and a horse, even though he had
never been taught himself. After Grade 6 life began to get busier and we moved to
Grimsby where most of our activities and my parents work were located. Dad built
another house for us on Debra Drive and then again around the corner on Juliana. He
decided to go back to school at 37 and get his teachers certificate at Western University
in London Ontario at a very busy time of life and yet my Mom and Dad found a way
together. He was a football (soccer) coach for many years sharing his love and passion
for the game. He had faith in me and taught me many skills on and off the field,
especially how to do a smoking penalty kick. After I left for University in 1985, Mom
and Dad moved to Port Dover where they made instant friends with their charismatic
personalities and zest for life. And yes he built that house up on the hill by Clonmel
too!! There wasn't anything that our Dad couldn't build. Dad worked at the local high
school teaching shop and Mom worked as an obstetrics nurse in Simcoe until their
retirement at 55. That is when life got fun. They had an RV that they travelled across
Canada from east to west stopping to visit their many friends with their trusted
companion Sheba, a gentle and loving German shepherd. Travel wasn't my Dad's
favourite pastime, however he loved my Mom to pieces and wanted to make her happy!
They went to Alaska on a cruise, Norway to visit my family and I (yes Dad I heard the
lesson you gave a million times on the proper way to say my family and I and not my
family and me!!!). Germany, Australia, all around the US and settling on retirement
living in a park in New Port Richey Florida as snowbirds. Dad and Mom loved heading
south in the winter and seeing their pals from both the US and Canada. My Dad, never
one to be on the sidelines for long, took up bowling with Mom and golf with his cronies
in Florida. I never thought I would see my Dad on a golf course, yet he did love riding
the golf cart and the laughs and beers shared with friends after the game!!
A favourite memory I have of my Dad was watching hockey night in Canada with him
when I was little and wanted to stay up later. He always said yes.
Our Dad was always there. Steadfast and proper; a proper Canadian Englishman.
He always had great confidence in our abilities, pushing us to be the best we could be.
We always knew what to expect - for example when he called our names, when he called
me Susie all was great, Sue meant status quo however Susan always brought trouble! Or
if he called all three of our names, Deborah, Susan, Andrew - we knew he wanted the
one whose name he had called last.
He has been the rock of our family. He was absolutely devoted to Mom and loved her
dearly all the 53 years of their married lives. It may not have always been easy, but it
was so worth it and I knew how much my Mom meant to my Dad - she completed him
and softened his sometimes-rough edges.
He taught me to be brave, face new challenges head on, to be compassionate towards
others, to love passionately and whole heartedly, to be honest and true to my family and
friends, to be adventurous and accept the consequences for my choices. He was a great
man with so man great qualities and abilities.
After two years of battling lung and brain cancer, he has now gone home to be with the
Lord. He is at peace, is comfortable, and has no pain nor is he bald anymore, I think!
We will miss you Dad so very much. He was the center of our family and such a strong
force in our lives. Rest in peace Dad. We will see you when we get to heaven and we
can have a family party complete with a proper cup of tea!!

We were privileged to meet Fred € Pat in Florida just a few years ago and we became very good friends, in fact we used to go bowling together. Both Pat and Fred hailed from England as we both did and that sealed our bond. When Fred got sick he wasn't bowling anymore, so we decided that we should visit each other's houses for a card game and a natter, well if anyone knows my husband Ray he is not a proficient card player, but that didn't matter, at least not with Fred, he was very patient and we didn't win very many games but we enjoyed his and Pat's company. The name of the game we played with them was called "'May I". We will always remember our fun nights together and remanise about stuff often. Fred was always there to give a helpiing hand when it came to electronics, he was an expert at it as Pat can attest to. I hope she will be able to master the TV remote without him by her side.
He will be sadly missed. Pat can always count on us if she needs a friend to chat with.

Our uncle Fred was a very humorous man and loved to have a banter with you. We have some wonderful memories of him when we visited last and he made us laugh alot especially when in the car with him driving.
( He didn't take kindly to back seat drivers as auntie pat will know and our car trips out were always so memorable )
We will miss so much about him but feel blessed he was part of our family!

How to make a proper cup of tea, according to Dad!
1. Fill the kettle with filtered water, not from the tap.
2. Get a china cup out and not a thick mug or anything else.
3. Wait for the water to come to a full rolling boil.
4. Warm the china tea cup with boiling water (swish around proper amount of time and dont miss any part of the china cup)
5. Place a Tetley tea bag into the china cup and pour boiling water over tea bag
6. Wait designated time (to taste) and allow it to steep but never too long
7. Remove the tea bag and do not squeeze the bag.
8. Put in the milk first and then the sugar. Ensure that it is stirred properly, otherwise you must start again!
9. Enjoy tea with a bicky!
10. That is a proper cup of tea, acccording to Dad! Cheers
