Obituary of DR. THOMPSON

THOMPSON, DR. SEVIS FROBISHER (GUY) THOMPSON, Dr. Sevis Frobisher (Guy) - After a lengthy illness and courageous fight, at his residence surrounded by his family and close friends, on Tuesday, August 3, 2010, in his 79th year. Sevis (Guy) Thompson beloved husband of the late Bernadine. Treasured father of Marshall (Eva) and Liana Thompson (Mac Campbell) both of Port Dover. Lovingly remembered and cherished by his grandchildren, the lights of his life, Mya, Cadell, Allegra and Geneva. Will be sadly missed by his sister Daisy Wilson of Cleveland, Ohio and fondly remembered by his many dear friends, colleagues and former patients. Guy was born in Sawyers, Jamaica. He attended Sawyers Public School in Trelawny township from the age of 7 to 15. He spent 6 months at a small private school and then attended Kingston Technical School from 1948 to 1951. He was first employed for 2 years after graduating Technical School by a concrete company in Jamaica. He then worked at the University of the West Indies medical lab, England, for 3 years. Guy left Jamaica permanently in 1956 to further his education at Indiana Technical College where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering. He emigrated to Canada in 1959 and was fortunate to be accepted at Ottawa University Medical School, from which he graduated in 1965 with a degree in family medicine. It was in Ottawa that he met the love of his life, Bernie. Guy and Bernie came to Port Dover in 1965 to set up his medical practice. Over the last 45 years he became a well-loved and well respected family physician both in Port Dover and at Norfolk General Hospital. Other than his family and his practice, his life time passion was golf. Guy was a long time member of the Norfolk Golf and Country Club and both he and Bernie travelled the world playing golf. When he wasn't at work, you would be sure to find him playing a few holes on one of the local courses. Guy believed in giving back to his community and spent his time making sure his patients were well-served. He most recently was pleased to know that plans were well underway to create new medical facilities in Port Dover and to bring new physicians to the area. Over the years he also dedicated his time and effort to helping local organizations send medical equipment and supplies to clinics and hospitals in Jamaica and to support the off-shore worker program in Norfolk County. In 2006, Guy and Bernie were honoured to be voted Port Dover Citizens of the Year. Dad, you instilled in us the values of empathy, perseverance, resilience, and generosity. You taught us to value education, to lead by example, and to demonstrate respect for others in our words and actions. A true philanthropist, your wisdom, philosophy, and service leadership has had a huge impact on your family and members of the whole community. Arrangements have been entrusted to THOMPSON WATERS FUNERAL HOME LTD., 102 First Avenue, Port Dover (519-583-1530). A celebration of Guy's life will be held at the Norfolk Golf and Country Club, 200 Argyle St. Simcoe, on Sunday, August 8, from 1:00 to 4:00. A private graveside memorial will be held at a later date. Expressions of sympathy/donations to the Port Dover Community Health Care Initiative or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family.
