Obituary of CONSTABLE SMITH

SMITH, CONSTABLE PAUL DOUGLAS SMITH, Constable Paul Douglas, of Simcoe, at Norfolk General Hospital on Saturday, August 14, 2010 in his 57th year, he passed away surrounded by the love of his family, after a valiant fight with cancer. Cherished and devoted husband of Judy (nee Stackhouse). Loving and proud father and grandfather of Christa Shortt (Jeff) and their children Jeryn and Liam and Amanda Anderson (Jeremy) and their children Porter and Rhya all of Waterford. Dearly loved brother and brother-in-law of Ruth (Paul), Vicky Raffay (Andy), Bill Brewer (Kris), Ed Stackhouse (Susan) and Jeff Stackhouse (Kris). Paul was predeceased by his father Cecil Smith, mother Grace Jackson and step-father Warren Jackson, mother-in-law Olive Stackhouse and father-in-law Tom Stackhouse. He will be sadly missed by his many friends and colleagues. Paul has been a Police Constable since 1985. First with the Haldimand/Norfolk Regional Police, then the O.P.P. Simcoe Detachment. Paul was highly respected and lead by example. He was well known in Port Dover, where he served the community with integrity, fair-mindedness and dependability. Honourably known as "The Sheriff of Port Dover". In 2009 he received the "Commissioner's Citation for Lifesaving" and was also awarded from St. John's Ambulance the "Special Certificate of Commendation". He will be remembered by the Port Dover and area residents as a highly principled officer and all around great guy. Paul's greatest love and joy was his wife, daughters and grandchildren. He was an avid outdoorsman, in his spare time he took great pleasure in fishing, boating and hunting. He was an Associate Member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #79. Family and friends are invtied to meet with the family to share their memories of Paul at a Celebration of Life Gathering on Saturday, August 21, 2010 from 1 pm to 5 pm at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #79, 200 West St. Simcoe.
